Drink-Tax Debate Continues

Officials Say Tax Will Save 700 County Jobs

The drink tax fight goes on in Allegheny County.

Opponents of the proposed tax lashed out during budget hearings this week.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato is pushing for a poured-drink tax and a tax on rental cars to help fund the Port Authority.

Opponents said that the undue taxes would cripple bars and restaurants.

"This county needs to live within its means," said Kevin Joyce of the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association. "A drink tax -- 10 percent drink tax, would be devastating to the hospitality industry in Allegheny County. We're sure of this."

Onorato said that the alternative is worse.

"It's much better than raising property taxes. I will not raise property taxes to fund transit," Onorato said.

Onorato said that if the poured-drink and car rental taxes aren't approved, the county would have to cut 700 jobs to balance the budget.
