Experts are predicting a fairly flat holiday shopping season this year except when it comes to flat-screen TVs.

One type of particular flat-screen is expected to plummet in price right after Thanksgiving.

Consumer Reports is predicting plasma sets to come down in price. According to the magazine, prices could fall as much as 40 percent below last year's prices after Thanksgiving.

Consumer Reports cites research data, predicting some 42-inch plasmas could sell for as little as $600 on Black Friday.

They said 50-inch plasmas could sell for about $1,400.

The plasma set, which uses gases to produce its picture, has always been less expensive than its LCD competitor or liquid crystal display sets.

Side-by-side, they have the same clarity. But the difference is that plasmas have more glare, while LCDs are harder to watch at an angle.

But why the sudden price decreases for plasmas?

"I think you're going to see plasma slowly drift away," said Gary Pietropola of Laketron TV. "That's my perspective on it. The LCD, because it's a much better technology, will take over."

Another reason for the price drop is that quality has improved dramatically on some of the massive, high-end plasmas.
