The private information of nearly 8,000 Duquesne University students was put into the hands of a person who's not supposed to have it.

Call 4 Action confirmed details late Thursday afternoon that Duquesne University accidentally e-mailed personal information of thousands of students and applicants to the wrong person.

Those affected were notified about the potential breach on Wednesday.

A prepared release from the university said the incident happened on Oct. 8.

According to the university, a file containing the personal information, mostly financial aid information, was mistakenly e-mailed to a student.

That same student reported the incident to the university and, according to Duquesne, did not share any of the information, which was removed from his computer.

Those on the list included anyone who filled out a FAFSA or financial aid form and listed Duquesne University on it.

The files contained names, Social Security numbers, household income and number of people in the household.

The university believes the problem was contained, but it urged students to monitor their credit using the Web site www.AnnualCreditReport.com.

Parents with questions should contact the university's office of public affairs at 412-396-6050.
