Pittsburgh-Area Schools Charging Extra For Fatty French FriesPOSTED: 1:40 pm EDT October 18,
2007 MONROEVILLE, Pa. -- Gateway High School in Monroeville will start charging extra for french fries at lunch. School officials said it's a new strategy to fight student obesity and poor nutrition.Fries have been pulled off the main lunch menu, and students who insist on the fatty finger food will be charged 50 cents more."Everyone's saying it's so dumb, because they're just making them pay more for it, and it should just be part of the lunch," said Gateway freshman Emily Farina. "I still see a lot of people getting them every day, so I don't think it's working yet."The french fry surcharge has been working at North Hills High School for two years now."It was difficult in the beginning, because they couldn't understand it, but as we started including larger salads and fruits and vegetables, they saw value there," said North Hills food services director George Zappas. At Gateway, fresh fruit, steamed vegetables and Caesar salads are now on the daily menu."People still buy them though, because they really like them," said Gateway freshman Lindsay Wratcher.
