Zone 2 Pittsburgh police and the district attorney's Drug Task Force said they confiscated suspected drug material Monday from Giggles, a novelty shop in Market Square.

They said the shop was selling heroin paraphernalia.

"There they confiscated drug paraphernalia, packaging materials for heroin," said Lt. Robert Roth, of the Pittsburgh police. "They did discover heroin, and also items to hide the packaged material, heroin, money, whatnot."

Roth said that they found scales used for weighing drugs, laxative for cutting or diluting drugs and a stamp for packaging heroin.

Police said they also found lots of bottles and cans that look real, but were far from normal.

"These are being sold as what's called can safes," said Jon Griener, of the Hill District. "They can be used for holding drugs, which is of course illegal. When's the last time you paid $17.99 for a can of soda?"

Police said the items were being promoted as a way to conceal drugs.

They said the shop's owner, Akhil Mishra, has been arrested at least two other times on charges of selling drug paraphernalia, and previously was sentenced to two years in a federal prison for it.

His business is not the first in Market Square to be raided recently for allegedly selling drugs or drug items.

"This is actually the third one," said Roth. "The Success Barber Shop was actually one that had drug selling coming out of that and the M&M Bar -- they're probably all within 50 feet of each other."

He said the raid comes amid an effort to clean up Market Square.
