House majority leader Bill DeWeese said the Legislature might work on a statewide smoking ban again.

DeWeese said he wants the House and Senate to reach a compromise and pass a ban by December.

Supporters of a ban said they know there is a lot still standing in the way of a compromise.

The House and Senate were unable to agree on new statewide smoking rules this summer but DeWeese, of Waynesburg, said he's now trying to arrange a conference meeting between the two bodies to work on a bill and pass it by mid-December.

Hurdles for the ban include smoking rules for casinos, smoking in small neighborhood bars and smoking in private clubs or places like the VFW and American Legions.

Those are obstacles that hung up the smoking ban debate in the past.

DeWeese said he is hopeful some exceptions won't get in the way of a statewide law.
