It has been a month and a half since Demi Cuccia was stabbed to death at her home in Monroeville.

Now, her family is reaching out to help other teenagers. On Saturday, they hosted a golf tournament at the Murrysville Golf Club.

Thirty-four foursomes took to the course, and more than 100 sponsors stepped forward to contribute to the cause.

Cuccia, 16, was a cheerleader at Gateway High School. A scholarship established in Cuccia's name will help cheerleaders in academics and sports.

"I kind of expected it. Demi was a very special girl, so we expected something special on her behalf," said Demi's father, Gary.

"It's a tremendous amount of work that was put into it, and greatly appreciated. Everybody was smiling and happy, and we're blessed with a wonderful day," said Demi's mother, Jodi.

Organizers said so many golfers wanted to take part in the event that they had to turn some away.

Golfers also had the chance to win one of three new cars, organizers said.

Demi Cuccia's boyfriend, John Mullarkey, 18, is awaiting trial on a homicide charge in connection with her death.
