A 17-year-old girl unable to attend her high school's homecoming due to injuries sustained in a Jefferson Hills car crash has been crowned the queen.

Senior Jamie Hans, one of 12 students nominated for homecoming queen, is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash Sept. 8 on Route 51.

She wasn’t at Monessen High School to receive the homecoming honor Friday night, but her sister, Jodie, stood in for her.

"I was really nervous, but I had to do it for Jamie," said Jodie. "She would do that for me."

Since the crash, Jamie Hans has undergone numerous surgeries and faces several more, her father said.

The community has come together since the crash, supporting the Hans family.

"Phenomenal," said her father, Bill. "Not only the city of Monessen, but the people in the Mon Valley area. The people who sent cards, thoughts, prayers."

A blood drive is being held by the school in Hans' honor on Thursday and Friday from noon to 7 p.m.
