2007 PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh police have used a robot to detonate a suspicious package found on top of a phone booth downtown.Police were told about the package around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday. They described it as a box with a cylinder that had wires coming out of it.It was found on top of a phone booth on Wood Street, police said. The street was closed to traffic between Fifth and Forbes avenues while a robot retrieved the item.The package was detonated by police in the middle of the street at about 8:20 a.m."The shot that you heard was a 12-gauge specialty round that we shoot from the robot, and it breaks apart the package that we're dealing with," said Officer Ronald Bliston of the Pittsburgh Police Department.It was not immediately clear what was in the package. Police said would collect the pieces and reconstruct the package to determine if it was dangerous.Police were trying to find the man who reportedly put the item on the phone booth and made a call before walking away.
