Pirates, Steelers Still Battling North Shore Casino PlansPOSTED: 5:04 pm EDT July 24,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- It got the green light from the state Supreme Court, but the Majestic Star Casino slated for the North Shore is under fire again. The Steelers and the Pirates are not exactly rolling out the welcome mat for Don Barden or his casino. Both teams are still trying to block final approval by the City Planning Commission. The two teams sent their attorneys to a Planning Commission hearing on Tuesday, and those attorneys said the approval of the casino's master plan cannot move forward without a traffic study being completed. The Planning Commission ordered PITG Gaming to complete a traffic study by Sept. 30.In the meantime, both teams have been meeting with PITG Gaming officials trying to persuade the casino company to make road improvements on the North Shore. They claim traffic would be overwhelming if those improvements are not made."The absence of an adequate traffic and parking study and resulting plan will ultimately lead to gridlock and congestion during PNC Park events, resulting in about one and a half hour of delays for fans wishing to attend Pirates games," said Pirates attorney Travis Williams. The Carnegie Science Center also had issues with Majestic Star moving in. Those issues included access for school buses, pedestrian safety, lighting and landscaping, but the science centers director testified Tuesday afternoon that the casino has been working very hard to address those issues and agreements have been made.
