Street's Mail Service Cut Due To Terrorizing Pit BullPOSTED: 4:20 pm EDT July 19,
2007 JEANNETTE, Pa. -- Neighbors in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, haven't had mail service for a week, and according to the Postal Service, a pit bull on their street is the reason why.Postal Service employees said a pit bull on Stella Street has been terrorizing the neighborhood, putting them in danger. The owner of the dog said she's just being defensive, but neighbors said situation has been going on for months. The final straw for the Postal Service came Saturday when the dog chased a letter carrier down the street. After that incident, service stopped, leaving many elderly residents no choice but to pick up their mail at the post office, which is several miles away."I can go for my mail, it's a little bit of an inconvenience, but there's some people on this street that can't get out to do that," said Jeannette resident Alice Kratochvil.WTAE Channel 4 Action News learned that twice, the dogcatcher has cited the dog's owner, Michelle Detar, with letting one of her other dogs run at large.Police said they, too, have gone to Detar's home, telling her to control her dogs.If the mail carrier provides testimony about being chased, the dog might have to find a new home, police said. The Postal Service said they plan to work with Animal Control on the issue.According to WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Jen Miele, police on Friday cited Detar for the third time.
