Drink Tax To Cover Public Transit Doesn't Sit Well With Bar-GoersPOSTED: 5:10 pm EDT July 2,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- A proposed 10 percent drink tax is part of the legislation being considered in Harrisburg that aims to have counties across the state pay a greater share of mass transit costs. If it becomes law, Allegheny County could choose to raise taxes on drinks, along with other types of taxes to help raise that transit money. Talk About It: Jump On Our Message Board Local patrons at South Side's Town Tavern said they are against the tax, saying the money could be used more efficiently."There's other things in the city and the suburbs that need to be fixed up, like the roads," said Dave Andrako of Monongahala."I think it's crazy that they're going to charge us extra money on something we already pay too much for to begin with," said Aaron Buchko of Monongahala.Local bartenders are worried, too, saying people would tip less if they spend more money on drinks."When they get the check, it's going to lower the tip," said bartender Kelly Wright. "It's going to take away from the tip."Another option is a proposed tax on rental cars.
