Police Search For Thieves Who Reprogrammed ATMPOSTED: 4:50 pm EDT June 28,
2007 DERRY, Pa. -- Surveillance video from an automated teller machine heist has Derry police puzzled.Police said a man and a woman went into a grocery store and somehow reprogrammed the ATMs, which let them steal more than $1,500.Surveillance shows a man walking into Masteracco's Market wearing shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops. He looks to be in his 30s or 40s, police said. His accomplice was a thin woman with long black hair.Police said they went in the market twice, once on June 19 and again on June 20.Police said they knew how to bring up the administrative screen on the ATM and make the machine think it was dispensing $1 bills, instead of $20 bills. So, when they asked for $20, they got $400.In two trips, they emptied the entire machine, police said."Someone is going in that has some sort of knowledge of these machines, changing the value of the denomination, then receiving much more money than they asked for," said Chief Randolph Glick of the Derry Borough Police Department. "This has never happened in this area before."Anyone with information is asked to contact police. Related Links: More County NewsGet RSS | E-Mail Alerts Copyright 2008 by ThePittsburghChannel.
