Plans For High-Voltage Power Line Facing OppositionPOSTED: 8:49 pm EDT June 13,
2007 SOUTH PARK, Pa. -- Major opposition is standing in the way of plans for a high-voltage power line that will cross through Washington and Greene counties. For the first time Wednesday, families in the path of the towers had a chance to lash out at federal regulators.Supporters of the 500 kilovolt power line believe it is necessary to handle a surge in demand for power."There will be a 200 foot right-of-way," said Dave Flitman of Allegheny Power. "At the edge of those right-of-ways there's no more EMF (Electro Magnetic Force) than you would experience using a hair dryer in your bathroom."Conversely, opponents are worried about health risks and environmental problems."I have read studies which said there is a link to childhood leukemia," said Frances Cooley.Wednesday's hearing is the first of seven. More hearings relating to the power line are expected to take place in the coming months. Copyright 2007 by ThePittsburghChannel. All rights reserved.
