Major opposition is standing in the way of plans for a high-voltage power line that will cross through Washington and Greene counties.

For the first time Wednesday, families in the path of the towers had a chance to lash out at federal regulators.

Supporters of the 500 kilovolt power line believe it is necessary to handle a surge in demand for power.

"There will be a 200 foot right-of-way," said Dave Flitman of Allegheny Power. "At the edge of those right-of-ways there's no more EMF (Electro Magnetic Force) than you would experience using a hair dryer in your bathroom."

Conversely, opponents are worried about health risks and environmental problems.

"I have read studies which said there is a link to childhood leukemia," said Frances Cooley.

Wednesday's hearing is the first of seven. More hearings relating to the power line are expected to take place in the coming months.
