Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle crash is the accident that made the whole Steeler nation cringe.

That crash happened one year ago Tuesday near the 10th Street Bridge.

Roethlisberger said he marked the day on his calendar.

"Because it's the one-year anniversary, the year it happened," Roethlisberger told WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram. "The day that I almost lost my life."

On one hand, Roethlisberger seems contrite and reflective about the accident that battered his face, ate up newspaper headlines and consumed seemingly endless television footage.

But then he flashes a different temperament, telling Ingram it hasn't consumed his thoughts.

"It's just one of those things that's over with and done with and hopefully that it's a year old, people will stop talking about it," said Roethlisberger.

Many motorcycle riders enjoy the freedom of choice regarding helmet safety, which has been Pennsylvania law since 2004.

State Rep. Dan Frankel introduced House bill 945 last month to reverse Pennsylvania's helmet law. He wants to make helmets mandatory, prior to what it was before September 2003.

Frankel said the bill received a huge endorsement from the Allegheny County Medical Society, but right now, no vote is scheduled for the bill.

Roethlisberger said he's been approached about other helmet safety campaigns.

"I've had a couple of requests for that," he said. "I figure it's every man's decision. I think it's every person's decision, whatever they want to do."

Whatever happens to Pennsylvania's helmet safety law, Roethlisberger said he really doesn't care, because he isn't riding anymore.
