The battle over a statewide smoking ban continued as the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a Clean Indoor Air Act banning smoking in all workplaces Monday.

State Sen. Stewart Greenleaf (R, Montgomery) said he's pleased by the committee's decision, but realizes opposition still exists from powerful special-interest groups such as casinos, restaurants and the tobacco industry.

The full Senate is expected to vote on the bill later this week.
