Senator Says Land Not Suited For StoreFerlo: Wal-Mart Store In Kilbuck Township 'Completely Inappropriate'POSTED: 6:21 pm EDT June 9,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- The land is still moving along Route 65 in Kilbuck Township, and now, one state senator said it's time for Wal-Mart to give up on its plans for building a new store there.Pennsylvania Sen. Jim Ferlo, whose district includes Kilbuck Township, called it a dangerous situation.Ground monitors revealed the land has slid another quarter-inch recently.Ferlo said it's obvious to him that the ground cannot accommodate a new giant store and a sea of asphalt parking lots."I really think it's reached the point right now where Wal-Mart should consider working with the county and donating the site and making it a green zone. I think we need to safeguard the continual slide -- do some appropriate tree plantings and landscaping. But the notion of further commercialization -- be it Wal-Mart or another store -- is completely inappropriate," Ferlo said. The Department of Environmental Protection said it is asking Wal-Mart to submit a report on how it plans to prevent additional slippage. The DEP said it expects to begin an evaluation of the plans on Monday.
