Small Fire Damages Meadows Temporary CasinoNo Injures Reported, Firefighters SayPOSTED: 12:26 am EDT June 1,
2007 MEADOW LAND, Pa. -- A small fire caused about $30,000 damage on the roof of the temporary casino at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino.Authorities did not immediately say what caused the fire at the building that will house more than 1,700 slot machines, a buffet, snack and sports bars. The fire was reported by a security guard at about 10:10 p.m. Thursday and was out about 90 minutes later, fire officials said.Three departments responded. The North Strabane Fire Department said the fire was about two feet in diameter. They said it burned the rubber roof but did not reach the ceiling of the casino. The roof has a metal undergirding that prevented flames from penetrating it."The fire was small," said Meadows General Manager Mike Graninger. "It was put out very quickly."Earlier this week, Cannery Casino Resorts, which owns the temporary slot machine facility 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, said the casino would not open as scheduled on Tuesday because the company needed to improve its security system. Officials with Las Vegas-based Cannery Casino could not immediately be reached for comment and it was not clear whether the fire would further delay the opening.
