A man drowned in the Mon River Wednesday night while trying to save his family's dog, officials said.

The drowning happened near the South Side end of the Birmingham Bridge, while the man's two young children watched, officials said.

According to police, 34-year-old Michael Schreiner was by the river when his dog, Jasmine, chased some ducks into the water. The dog swam out of the river, but the man was unable to.

River Rescue officials said they had the man out of the water and on their boat in less than 30 minutes. He later died at Mercy Hospital.

"If anybody went away, I wish it wasn't him," said Schrenier's son, Michael Jr. "He was the best person in the world to me."

"He's a good guy," said Schreiner's girlfriend, Kristina Rukavina. "Cared about his kids tremendously. Would do anything and everything for them. Loved them to death."

Officials said the evening took a bizarre turn when a witness who had tried to save the man attempted to go back to the scene.

Police officers said they made several attempts to stop her, and the altercation turned violent. The woman now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, officials said.
