It was announced on Thursday that a downtown barber shop in Market Square has been shut down.

According to District Attorney Stephen Zappala, an emergency injunction against Success Barbershop on Market Street was issued, following several months of surveillance and investigative work.

Since November, Zappala said, there have been more than 120 arrests in and around the vicinity of the shop.

Zappala said surveillance video over the last month confirmed activity consistent with drug sales inside the waiting area of the shop.

"We believe that this is the first time in the history of Allegheny County that the Drug Nuisance Law has been used to shut down an operating business," said Zappala.

"They shut us down," said Success employee Terry Perry. "People have to eat and people have to feed their children and all of sudden they close the barber shop."

Perry said the shop has never had any problem with drugs.

A court hearing is scheduled for May 30 to determine whether the barber shop will be permanently closed.
