Police: 3rd-Grader Misses Bus, Drives To School2 Cars Hit; No One HurtPOSTED: 12:35 p.m. EST January 17, 2002 GREENSBURG, Pa. -- A 9-year-old Westmoreland County girl wrecked her uncle's vehicle as she was trying to drive it to school Thursday morning, police said.
The girl, a third-grade student at Amos K. Hutchinson Elementary in Greensburg, apparently missed her bus and couldn't get a ride from her parents, who were already at work.
She took the keys to her uncle's Jeep Wrangler around 8 a.m. and drove almost two blocks before colliding with a parked car, police said. She then backed up, put the vehicle in drive, and hit another parked car.
No injuries were reported.
The girl was taken to school. Police do not plan to file charges.
"It's a good sign that she is so concerned about her education and she was worried about missing school," said Greensburg police Chief Richard Baric. "A lot of kids would have decided to stay home and watch cartoons all day, so we have to give her credit for that."Copyright 2002 by ThePittsburghChannel. All rights reserved.
