Slow-Moving Landslide Causing Massive Problems On Local StreetsPOSTED: 3:06 pm EDT April 13,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- Last week, tons of trees, muck and mud tumbled onto homes on Beechwood Boulevard in Greenfield, forcing homeowners to flee.As of Friday, the situation ha d gone from bad to worse, officials said.Ivondale Street is slowly sliding over the hillside o nt o houses below."Where am I going to go? I'm 77-years old, me and my wife," said homeowner William Kolesar. "Where am I going to go?"Kolesar is slowly losing his property to the landslide. With a wife and three children, homeowner Shawn Kopa is worried, too.His family home sits on Ivondale Street at a spot barely one car can get through."What happens if my kid has to go to the hospital?" said Kopa.Councilman Doug Shields toured the area on Friday with the fire chief and the city's engineer. The solutions aren't easy, Shields said: either buy all the homes involved or fix the problem, both of which would cost a lot of money."It is easily a $1 million solution to go in and repair at least three or four sections of the roadway with retaining walls," said Public Works Engineer Patrick Hassett."We have money in the capital budget, and I'm asking for help from the state representative to see if we can't do something with a buyout here," said Shields.City Council plans to meet on Monday on Ivondale Street.
