Teams, Residents, Casino Owner Exchange Harsh WordsPOSTED: 12:40 am EDT April 4,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- When finally built, the Majestic Star Casino is expected to draw millions of visitors a year to Pittsburgh's North Shore. The casino owner said the average crowd would be 15,000 to 20,000 people a day, far less than many sports events. However, representatives of the Pirates, the Steelers and the Carnegie Science Center, among others told the city's planning commission on Tuesday that they're concerned."[The casino] has done little or no traffic study, especially no traffic study with regard to events and how casino traffic will or will not interfere with event traffic," said Greg Rhodes, the Steelers' attorney.Casino owner Don Barden responded to the groups."I'd also add that we're a little different," said Barden. "We're not subsidized. Nobody's building this for us. We're paying 53 percent taxes."One North Side resident who has been fighting the Steelers for years over parking, traffic and inebriated fans said he welcomes the casino."From my perspective as a North Sider, this is the best thing since sliced bread, because our biggest problem, Heinz Field, will finally get addressed," said John DeSantis, who lives near the stadium. After the meeting, Barden dodged reporters, but later gave a statement."It's a typical process. People have various interests, and some of the interests are selfish and some of the interests are not in the best interests of everyone in the room, but it was sort of normal," said Barden.
