Two people were hurt in a Bellevue apartment building fire late Monday night.

The flames broke out in the 500 block of Maryland Avenue just after 11 p.m.

Bellevue police officers Bill Scheller and Earl Grubbs are being credited as heroes for risking their lives to save the residents of the apartment building.

Firefighters said one person was believed to be unconscious, while the other suffered from smoke inhalation. Their conditions were not released.

Scheller and Gubbs were the first to arrive on the scene. Without any equipment, they went into the building to make sure everyone was OK, which is when they found a woman unconscious.

"They were bringing her down the steps and put her on a gurney," said witness Frank Hutchinson.

"The medics than took her to Suburban General Hospital, and I understand that on the way to the hospital, she went into cardiac arrest, so the officers truly did save her life," said Bellevue Police Chief Michael Bookser.

Grubbs and Scheller were also having breathing problems and were treated for injuries, too.

"I saw them coughing and I said to my husband, 'That doesn't look very good,' and they took one of the officers away," said witness Tricia Schink. "And the other one just kept coughing, and they kept giving him oxygen, and they took him away, too."

Both of the officers will be OK, authorities said.

"When I talked to them this morning, I congratulated them for their heroism and also told them that they are supposed to get home at night to their families," said Bookser.
