Senator's Son Charged In Connection With Neighbor's DeathPOSTED: 12:16 pm EDT March 29,
2007 GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The teenage son of state Sen. Bob Regola was charged as a juvenile on Thursday with a weapons offense in connection with the death last summer of his neighbor, Louis Farrell. Bobby Regola, 17, of Hempfield Township, was charged with one misdemeanor account of possession of a weapon by a minor, according to his attorney, Duke George. The charges are related to the death of Farrell, 14, whose body was found behind his home with a single gunshot wound to the head that was fired from a weapon owned by Regola.George said juvenile court officials notified him that the charge had been filed."It's a sad day for the criminal justice system. I haven't seen the allegations, and I don't know how they are going to prove this," George said. Because the charge against Bobby Regola is not a serious felony, the criminal complaint is not public and subsequent hearings in the case will be closed, George said.Authorities aren't seeking the boy's detention, meaning he won't be taken into custody while the charges are pending, George said. If Regola is found delinquent because of the charge -- the juvenile court equivalent to being found guilty -- he could be detained in a juvenile facility or placed on probation until he turns 21, or for some lesser period of time.On Wednesday, the senator surrendered to authorities to face accusations of improperly storing the gun and then lying about it at a coroner's inquest last month.Regola, 44, of Hempfield, Westmoreland County, was arraigned on charges of perjury, false swearing, reckless endangerment and illegal possession of a weapon by a minor.
