A fight between two falcons was caught on tape this week in Oakland at the Cathedral of Learning.

Dorothy, a peregrine falcon, was perched atop a cathedral ledge on Sunday when another falcon invaded her nest, fighting with her mate.

Kate St. John witnessed the life-and-death struggle on her web camera, watching the male mate, Erie, battle the intruder.

"It was scary to me, because I had a vested interest in seeing Erie win, and I couldn't tell which one was Erie," said St. John.

Researchers were given a rare glimpse into the world of peregrine falcons.

It's common for an intruding falcon to try to take over a territory and the associated nest and mate, but what is uncommon and rare is to catch video images of a fight.

Researchers said Erie and Dorothy might not be out of the woods yet. It is breeding season for peregrine falcons, which means they are susceptible to another attack.
