A Franklin Park soldier was killed in Iraq when his unit encountered an improvised explosive while on patrol Friday, said officials.

Capt. Todd M. Siebert, 34, of the H & S Marine Company was stationed in the Anbar Province in Iraq and had arrived six weeks before he was killed.

Siebert was a lifelong resident of Franklin Park and graduated from North Allegheny High School in 1990.

He attended Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1999 with honors. He had enlisted in 1992 and was promoted to sergeant in 1994 before he was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1999. He also served in Afghanistan in 2001 -- deploying nine days after 9-11.

Siebert leaves behind his wife Darcy Siebert, a 6-year-old son; a 9-year-old daughter; his two sisters; his brother and his mother and father -- Dorothy and Thomas Siebert.

"Todd was a very loving, caring, personable, sensitive person," said Siebert's father, Tom. "From high school ROTC to the Marine Corp., he loved and believed in what he was doing. Everyone he met and knew thought highly of him. In his very last e-mail from Iraq, he said he loved his job."

His family said they were thankful for the time they spent with him, especially his final Christmas.
