Local Company Sends Super Bowl Losers' Gear Overseas

The Indianapolis Colts are Super Bowl champions, but the NFL was prepared for a Chicago Bears win as well, producing championship clothing for both teams to be handed out at game's end.

But what happens to the losing team's gear?

Moments after winning the Super Bowl, the Colts looked like champs, wearing championship hats and shirts.

But the gear sporting Chicago as the national champions will be heading to a warehouse located in Sewickley.

World Vision, a humanitarian organization, is a weigh station for products heading to those in need worldwide.

"We are dealing with people over there who are just trying to survive and live day-to-day and general survival and for them to get something like that, it not only gives them something to put clothing on their back, it lets them know someone is out there who really cares about them," said Jeff Fields of World Vision.

Among the items to be sent to Africa and eastern Europe will be 300 hats and shirts which were supposed to go to Chicago had the Bears won the Super Bowl.

"It's not fair to those fans. It's not fair to the team. It's not fair to the coaching staff, so we have them taken out of the country," said Susan McBride-Rothman of the NFL. "But we won't dispose of them. We will not destroy garments when so many people need something, so that's why we send them out of the country."

Thanks to World Vision, the would-be pieces of memorabilia go overseas, where American football is far from religion.

"To them, it's an article of clothing. They are just glad to have that. They probably do not know who the Seahawks are or the Steelers or any of the NFL teams are," said Fields.

The program does create confusion for Americans traveling through foreign lands.

Last year, the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl to the Steelers, but somewhere, someone is sporting Seattle's Super Bowl XL championship shirt.
