Somerset Officials Update Development Plans Near Flight 93 Memorial

UPDATED: 10:33 am EST January 23, 2007

Somerset County officials are trying to come up with a plan to prevent too many businesses from popping up near the planned Flight 93 Memorial site.

There are three main roadways less than 18 miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Somerset exit that can be used to access the crash site in Shanksville.

County commissioners updated residents at a public meeting Monday night, saying they want to address concerns that might arise when the memorial is completed and attracting up to 250,000 visitors annually.

Jim Klein, a principal with Lardner-Klein Landscape Architects, says officials want to make sure development doesn't detract from the memorial. He showed projections of potential development, including restaurants, motels and shops.

A study, to be completed in June, will provide recommendations to government officials in the area.
