Inquest Delayed In Shooting With Senator's Gun

An inquest into a fatal shooting involving state Sen. Bob Regola's gun probably will not be held this month, because the Westmoreland County coroner is searching for an independent arbiter to preside over it.

Coroner Ken Bacha said he is looking for someone with no ties to either Regola or the family of Louis Farrell, the 14-year-old Hempfield Township boy found shot to death last July 22.

"We want someone absolutely neutral and unconnected to any person," Bacha told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Farrell, whose family lives next door to the Regolas, was watching the senator's pets while he was in Harrisburg and was found dead in the woods behind the two families' homes, authorities have said.

State police investigators have not been able to determine if the boy shot himself accidentally or on purpose, or whether he was shot by someone else.

District Attorney John Peck announced in November that an inquest would be held because investigators felt getting people to testify under oath might be the only way to determine how Farrell died.

Because testimony may take two days or more, Bacha said the inquest will likely be scheduled sometime after a two-week criminal court session ends later this month.
