Officials: Westmoreland County Transit ThrivingPOSTED: 4:24 pm EST January 4,
2007 WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. -- The changes coming to the Port Authority might force drivers to consider their options in the next few months, but if you're coming into Pittsburgh from Westmoreland County, things could be looking up since the Transit Authority there is growing. The Westmoreland Transit said ridership is up and fares are staying the same. The Westmoreland Transit offers commuter service to Pittsburgh daily, Monday through Friday. Thirteen buses go into the city each morning, and 14 return in the evening. The Transit has service from as far away as Latrobe and Mount Pleasant into the city for about $4, and it costs $2.50 from communities close to the Allegheny County border like North Huntingdon and Murrysville.According to the Transit, those border communities have seen the most growth in commuters heading to downtown Pittsburgh."We are extremely pleased," said Larry Morris of the Transit. "Our commuter ridership into Pittsburgh increased by 45 percent last year, and it continued to grow. We've had to add buses, and we are this point at capacity as far as our equipment is concerned."When changes to Port Authority of Allegheny County routes come, like cuts in service and fare hikes, the Westmoreland Transit could see its ridership swell, and it is something on which board members will be keeping a close eye.Riders won't see any changes at the Westmoreland Transit until at least June, which is when the Transit going to re-evaluate its budget, take a look at ridership and make any changes necessary.
