A dog was seriously injured when it jumped from a busy bridge Friday, said witnesses.

Doctors said the white German shepherd was lucky to survive the fall.

She suffered multiple fractures in her both of her front legs and a collapsed lung after jumping 40 feet from an Ivory Avenue overpass onto McKnight Road.

Doctors at Northview Animal Hospital said that the dog is definitely not a stray. She is clean and her nails are clipped, but they cannot find the owners.

Doctors said it looked like a car hit the dog, but witnesses said that never happened.

A K9 officer at the scene said he believed the dog was loose, running around in traffic up on the overpass. When the officer saw the dog fall he raced to help her.

“She was having trouble breathing. It seemed like she was fighting for her life. She was lucky she wasn't hit by a car when she came over the side,” said deputy Bob Chambers, of the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department.

Chambers brought the dog to the Northview Animal Hospital -- where doctors went to work.

But because doctors couldn’t find the owners of the dog, a nonprofit called Animal Friends paid for the surgery.

Anyone who recognizes the dog is urged to call the Northview Animal Hospital at (412) 364-5353.
