C4A: Verizon FiOS Cable TV Now Available In Some Pittsburgh Areas

UPDATED: 6:12 pm EST November 8, 2007

Cable television customers in some Pittsburgh areas have something they've never had before -- a choice.

Verizon is starting to roll out its FiOS TV service in several neighborhoods, hoping to compete with Comcast.

The service is all-digital cable TV, delivered on an all-fiber optic network.

"FiOS TV also brings to consumers something that they've never had before and something which is long overdue: expanded choice and competition for TV service," said Pa. Verizon President William Peterson.

But how does Verizon compare with Comcast price-wise?

Verizon FiOS is $42.99 a month for its premier digital service, plus $4.99 for the box. Comcast is $56.39 a month for digital starter cable. For high-definition stations, FiOS is $9.99 a month and Comcast $8.99.

Parts of the following communities currently have FiOS TV availability:

  • Bethel Park

  • Franklin Park

  • Hampton

  • Indiana Township

  • McCandless

  • Mt. Lebanon

  • O'Hara

  • Ohio Township

  • Peters

  • Ross

  • Sewickley

  • Shaler

  • Upper St. Clair

  • West View

More neighborhoods will be added as the company negotiates cable franchise agreements in each area, Verizon said.

Under current state regulations, the company must negotiate franchises with each individual area it hopes to serve, which can be a time-consuming process in a state like Pennsylvania with many small municipalities.
