Fines Threatened Against Woman Caring For Ducks

A woman caring for ducks in Elizabeth Borough, some without feet, is trying to help relocate them.

Debbie Metz leaves food for the ducks a few times a week, but according to some neighbors, part of the problem is that the food is attracting more than just the ducks.

Neighbors said that where the ducks are is the site of an old junkyard, so they're having rat problems, and the city said they might have to step in with a fine.

"Yes. They're my babies," said Metz. "They didn't eat their breakfast this morning. They got me in trouble."

The leftover food, scattered on the street, nearly led to a fine for Metz.

"He told me if I feed the duck on the street, he's going to write me up for littering," said Metz. "I don't know what to do. I'm not going to let them starve."

Since the colorful muscovie ducks can't fly more than a few feet, Metz has already helped relocate more than 12 of them. To get the rest, Metz said she needs to get them out of the river.

"I'm trying to get them out of here," said Metz.

"Now, if it becomes a health issue, they need to stop feeding the ducks, and if they don't, they will be cited," said Mayor John Yacura.

Metz said the threat of a fine won't stop her, though.
