A leak at the Greensburg County Courthouse caused some major damage overnight.

The leak appears to have started on the second floor of the courthouse. Officials think a hose disconnected from a commode overnight, causing the water to leak through the ceilings.

A half-inch of water covered the floor of the adult probation office that houses the bathroom where the leak originated. Crews did their best to dry things out, but said it was too late.

The treasure's office, responsible for hunting and dog licenses, was soaked, so those will be unavailable Tuesday.

Authorities said the cafeteria manager, who comes in at 6:30 a.m., was the first to notice the leak.

"At about 7 o'clock, I heard a drip on the table, and I looked over, and there was a puddle all over the floor and the table," said Laurel Court manager Bobbie Pfeil.

Crews said there is water damage to computers and carpeting in the clerk of courts office; public defender's and district attorney's office; and adult probation, elections, treasurers, controllers and commissioners offices, all which were running on a backup power supplies for several hours Tuesday morning.

Hoses had to be run from inside the courthouse out through exit ways where salvage trucks were powered.

In the meantime, hundreds of boxes of documents had to be moved to drier offices so the leaking water wouldn't destroy them. The hose has been repaired, but it will take several hours before the Westmoreland County Courthouse dries out.

Crews said the water dampened the paycheck printing machines. Payday for the county is Friday and checks are usually printed today, but workers said it looks like the machines will be dry in time.

Since no courtrooms were damaged, court is up and running.
