Call 4 Action: Controversial Marketing For XanGo JuicePOSTED: 4:53 pm EDT October 13,
2006 PITTSBURGH -- How would you like to try a juice that can cure all sorts of diseases and infections? There's controversy over how this health drink has allegedly been marketed. The government has sent a warning to the makers of the product, which is going to be peddled in the Pittsburgh area over the weekend. The drink is called XanGo, and Call 4 Action reporter Aaron Saykin said its maker is in hot water with the Food and Drug Administration.According to the FDA, brochures aimed at recruiting distributors for the product are claiming it can prevent -- and in some cases cure -- all sorts of diseases and infections.Starting on Saturday, XanGo will be one of more than 150 exhibits at the Pittsburgh Women's Show this weekend in Monroeville.According to XanGo's Web site, the drink -- referred to as a dietary supplement -- is made from the fruit of an exotic tropical mangosteen tree -- which, according to the company, has all sorts of health benefits. The FDA says it obtained brochures from distributors of the drink, claiming the product can help prevent things like cancer, depression, joint inflammation and Alzheimer's disease, and claiming to lower both blood sugar and blood pressure.Last month, the FDA sent a warning letter to XanGo, telling the company that "these claims cause your product to be a drug" and adding "the introduction ... of an unapproved new drug is prohibited under the FD&C Act and may lead to enforcement action, including seizure and/or injunction."XanGo declined Call 4 Action's request for a recorded phone interview. In a statement, XanGo said the brochures obtained by the FDA were made by a third-party distributor, not the company, and "XanGo does not publish nor endorse any literature that makes health claims. Further, XanGo does not condone the use of noncompliant literature by its distributors."XanGo said it's working with the FDA to resolve the issue. The organizers of the Pittsburgh Women's Show -- of which WTAE is a sponsor -- told Call 4 Action that they were unaware of the letter from the FDA. They would not give any further comment. Copyright 2006 by ThePittsburghChannel. All rights reserved.
