PITTSBURGH -- If you're one of those taxpayers who usually ends up dashing to the post office just before midnight on April 15, you might want to change your plan.

Tax returns must be postmarked by midnight April 15.

But unlike in years past, the United States Postal Service will be operating under normal business hours on Wednesday.

"Over the years, we've seen a consistent reduction in the number of forms we receive for the IRS," said USPS spokesman Tad Kelley.

Kelley said most post offices weren't open until midnight last year either. With more people filing online and a slumping economy, Kelley said it isn't practical to have extended hours on April 15.

"We must be very responsible with how we use our resources," Kelley said. "We have a responsibility to the rate payer, to keep our costs down to keep their costs down."

A number of local post offices have retail services as late as 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. and/or feature the Automated Postal Center with 24-hour access.

When using a collection box, a news release on the USPS website advises customers check the last pickup time posted on the collection receptacle, to make sure their return will be postmarked on April 15. If the final collection has taken place, the return will be postmarked the following day.

The following post offices have business hours extending past 5 p.m.:

Bethel Park: 2765 South Park Road - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 7 p.m.

Blawnox: 1310 Old Freeport Road - Window open until 6 p.m. Final mail pickup at 6 p.m.

Bloomfield: 5182 Liberty Ave. - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 7 p.m.

Castle Shannon: 370 Castle Shannon Blvd - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 7 p.m.

Coraopolis: 1140 Thorn Run Road - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 7 p.m.

Pittsburgh (North Side): 1001 California Ave. - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 9 p.m.

Ross Township: 4981 McKnight Road - Window open until 7 p.m. Final mail pickup at 7 p.m.

The following Pittsburgh area Post Offices feature the Automated Postal Center (APC) in their lobbies. All but Washington, PA are located in 24-hour lobbies. However, postal officials said the last mail collection will be when the branch closes. Any returns dropped off after the final collection will be postmarked the next day.
