If you gamble with no coverage, or cheap coverage, the insurance game may likely cost you.
Statistics show one in seven drivers isn't covered to pay for an accident, Channel 4 Action News anchor Wendy Bell reported.
The average claim for a fender bender is about $2,200. That's just for body work.
If there are injuries, the average claim jumps to $15,538. And in the event of death, even if no lawsuit is filed, the insurance claims can total $790,000.
Minimum coverage requirements are low in most states, which lulls drivers into thinking those amounts are all they need.
A resident of Morgantown, W.Va., needs at least $20,000 in bodily injury liability and $40,000 in coverage per accident.Ohio is a tort state, so drivers don't need insurance -- just proof of financial responsibility.
Recommended state minimums are low -- $12,500 liability and $25,000 per accident. In Pennsylvania, it's $15,000 bodily injury and $30,000 per
accident. That kind of coverage won't be enough in the event of a bad wreck.
Does your auto insurance policy provide for a rental car if you get in a wreck? If you don't have
rental car reimbursement insurance, you'll pay a lot of money out of pocket. Coverage may be added to a policy for $1 a month, but without it, you'll pay $40 a day on a rental while your car's in the
shop.
Bell advises buying as much liability coverage as you can afford. It will increase the premium, but you'll be covered.
A 33-year-old woman driving a 1998 Ford Taurus with no accidents, no tickets and a good credit history can get the basic coverage required in
Pennsylvania for $46 a month. If she raises her liability coverage to the recommended $100,000 bodily
injury and $300,000 per accident, her monthly payment goes up to $79. That's $33 dollars more a month -- $1 a day -- for protection against bad accidents.
Another option is an umbrella policy. For about $12 a
month or 40 cents a day, you can get an additional $1 million liability protection that will cover whatever your auto policy does not. If
you cause an accident and someone tries to sue you, the umbrella
policy is your greatest ally.
