Vincent Giordano Corp., of Philadelphia, is voluntarily recallingabout 52,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meat products.

MEAT RECALLED
The meat may be tainted with listeria, a germ that can cause serious food poisoning, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The government says no illnesses have been reported. Georgia officials say they detected listeria on a deli meat product from a Kroger delicatessen counter in Atlanta. It's unclear when the sample was taken.

Vincent Giordano is recalling 16 varieties of pastrami, corned beef and roast beef from stores nationwide.

Each of the recalled products bear the establishment number "EST. 5397" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products subject to recall also bear the date code "350."

The products were produced between Dec. 11 and Dec. 15, 2003, and were packaged on Dec. 16, 2003. They were distributed to retail stores nationwide.

FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

As a result of the tainted sample found in Atlanta, Kroger Co. has announced a recall of Private Selection brand roast beef from its stores in 20 states. The company says those who bought the product this month and who have it in their refrigerators should return it to the store for arefund.

The Private Selection roast beef being recalled was distributed through the deli service counters at Kroger stores in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Louisiana and Texas. The recall also includes Dillon Stores in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma; Baker's stores in Nebraska; Gerbes Stores in Missouri; Hilander stores in Illinois; Kessel stores in Michigan; and Owen's and Pay Less stores in Indiana.

Eating food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis, but the disease can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems -- infants, the frail or elderly and persons with chronic disease, HIV infection or in chemotherapy.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Bruce Belack, company vice president of sales, at (215) 467-6629.

Consumers with food safety questions can phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
