Comcast, NFL Network Clash Could Leave Viewers In Dark

Contract Between Two Set To Expire

Comcast cable customers could end up being losers of an ongoing feud between the company and a popular TV network.

The NFL Network was once free for Comcast digital cable customers, but the company began charging extra for it two years ago.

For three years the NFL Network has televised some of the biggest regular season games in addition to its popular programming, bit it may soon disappear for customers altogether.

"I'm the consumer. I'm the customer here and I'd like to have an option. Now my option is taken away from me, so I'm not really happy with that," said Comcast customer Dale Wilson.

Earlier this week, Comcast sent Wilson and thousands of other customers a message on the cable boxes, telling them the NFL Network may terminate its right to carry the station May 1.

The contract between the network and cable provide is set to expire and neither is budging.

Both sides have been clashing like offensive and defensive linemen for years after the cable company moved the station to a subscription tier.

Comcast is blaming the NFL Network, telling Call 4 Action, "The NFL has not accepted our offer (to continue our current agreement)."

THE NFL Network responded, "Comcast refuses to sit down and reach an agreement...on a contract extension."

"When they take away the channels that people watch, why work with them at all," said Comcast customer Paul Taylor.

Regardless of the outcome, Steelers fans in the Pittsburgh-area will still get to watch the game as a local broadcast station must televise the game under league rules.

Comcast issued the following statement:

“We have offered to carry the NFL Network under the terms of our current affiliation agreement while the litigation that the NFL brought against Comcast continues, but the NFL has not accepted our offer. We believe our proposed extension is in the best interest of our customers and NFL fans so that they can continue to have the same access to the Network that they now enjoy. Because the NFL as not accepted our offer, we are required by regulations to notify our customers of the possibility that the NFL may terminate Comcast’s right to carry the Network.”

NFL Network issued this statement:

“Comcast refuses to sit down and reach an agreement with NFL Network on a contract extension that would make the Network more widely available to a larger number of subscribers on its cable systems without the extra monthly fee that Comcast now sets and collects. Comcast had carried NFL Network to a larger number of homes without the extra fee during the first three years of our agreement We have more than a month to negotiate with Comcast and reach a new agreement similar to the contracts NFL Network has with more than 300 other cable operators, Telco and satellite companies. We hope that Comcast will act responsibly, negotiate with us and keep the best interests of Steeler and Eagle fans in mind.”
