UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- Even though Thanksgiving is over, the Salvation Army is still giving thanks because of what was found inside a red kettle at a Uniontown Giant Eagle.
Diamond Ring Found In Salvation Army Kettle At Giant EagleThe hope is the donation isn't too good to be true.
Instead of cash, a half-carat diamond ring was dropped into a Salvation Army kettle this holiday season in Uniontown.
The 18-carat, white gold ring was found Saturday in a kettle outside the Giant Eagle grocery store on Pittsburgh Street, said Salvation Army Capt. Christopher Blessing.
"He said, 'My goodness look at this!' And we came running over and he pulled it out and it looked like it might be costume jewelry. But the more you look at it, we could tell we found something special in the kettle," said Capt. Jennifer Blessing.
The Salvation Army showed the diamond ring to a jeweler in Uniontown, who appraised the flawless half-carat diamond setting at $2,000.
The Salvation Army isn't showing the public the actual donated ring in case someone dropped it in the kettle by accident.
"If they can honestly describe it to us then we will be more than willing to give it back to them. But if it was a donation then we're going to be overjoyed," Blessing said. "We're hoping we have a little angel out there that just tried to help us in a very unusual way."
If no one comes forward to claim it the money from the diamond ring will be used to provide hot meals for hundreds of needy folks this winter.
