Port Authority Goes To Feds For More North Shore Connector Cash

Tunnel Under Allegheny River Will Link To Downtown Pittsburgh

POSTED: 2:08 pm EDT July 9, 2008

The Port Authority wants to dip into its federally funded capital budget to cover cost overruns in its light-rail expansion from downtown to the North Shore, according to a report by WTAE Channel 4's news exchange partner, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Authority officials have not said how much money they want to take out of the federal budget for the $435 million North Shore Connector, and it's still unclear how far over budget the project will run.

Federal Transit Administration spokesman Paul Griffo said the FTA is waiting to receive a viable recovery plan from the Port Authority.

The light-rail expansion is extending trolley service by just over a mile by building two tunnels under the Allegheny River.

Port Authority spokeswoman Judi McNeil said the problems are due to increasing costs of construction materials. She said other transit agencies nationwide are tackling similar problems.
