Union Workers In South Side Protest Big OilGroup Blames President, Candidate For High Gas PricesPOSTED: 5:56 pm EDT June 21, 2008 PITTSBURGH -- Some working families from western Pennsylvania gathered in Pittsburgh's South Side to protest the big oil companies on Saturday.The protesters, representing the Allegheny County Labor Council, blamed President George W. Bush and U.S. Sen. John McCain., R-Ariz., the Republican presidential nominee."It's hard on everybody. The crisis is affecting everybody. I just had to go to a cheaper car to be able to afford it," said Kelly Vereb, of the United Steelworkers. "Some people, I don't know how they do it, I don't know how they get back and forth to work, filling you tank at $60."The group called on both Bush and McCain to end their support for tax breaks for big oil. They said they would rather see tax dollars spent on the economy and energy independence rather than the war in Iraq.
