Most people don’t like being overcharged at the register. When it happens, shoppers usually point it out, and insist the mistake be fixed.
But some savvy shoppers use a sometimes secret rule that actually allows you to make money from a store's mistake.

Check it OutAccording to state law, the scanner at the register must be accurate 98 percent of the time. But if you happen to be ringing up during the 2 percent of the time when it can be wrong, you could get a discount or sometimes even free items.
"The supermarkets literally give the item for free, up to a cap of $10 typically," said consumer advocate Mary Bach.
And it's not just grocery stores. Some big retail stores offer similar compensation, as long as you ask the store to honor something called the "scanner guarantee policy."
The policy is voluntary and not required by law. Some stores have a sign posted at the register notifying the customer, while others do not.
Bach serves on the state board that created the policy.
"You certainly should ask for it, and you should ask for it loudly," she said.
JCPenney, for example, will give you a $5 gift card after correcting the price. At Giant Eagle and Shop 'N Save, the item is free, as long as it's less than $10.
"I think that's wonderful," said one shopper. "I had no idea that they did that. But that is very nice to know, because you can keep them in check at all times."
