Call 4 Action: Cheapest Days To Buy

UPDATED: 7:18 pm EST December 27, 2007

It's often said that timing is everything in life -- especially when it comes to shopping.

Some experts with BankRate.com said that if you wait for certain months or even specific days of the week, you could walk away with a bigger bargain.

If you're thinking about buying a new car, the end of the month is always a good time.

But you can also try going to the dealer on Monday -- the slowest day after a busy weekend, when they're more likely to cut you a better deal.

"It can save you big bucks," Mary Bach, a consumer advocate for AARP, told Call 4 Action. "Certainly, shopping has become a game, and we all need to play to win."

And what if you need to fill up that car with gas? Try Thursday before 10 a.m., when most gas stations raise their prices for the busy weekend.

Do you like to shop at department stores? You'll want to strike on Saturday evening, when they begin putting out their Sunday sale items.

And as for flier coupons, "you can play the game by going to a supermarket or store to buy a Sunday paper on Saturday," Bach said.

Grocery shopping is a little trickier.

The safe bet is always to go on Sunday, when you can match your coupons with the sales.

But you can also try going on the day a sale ends, when several of the sale items are gone. Get a rain check and hold onto it until you also get a coupon.

Here are a few other tips:

  • Airline tickets: Wednesday morning, when price wars are in full swing.
  • Clothing stores: Thursday evening, when they stock for the weekend.
  • Dining out: Tuesdays, when the fresh deliveries usually arrive.

It isn't just days of the week. Certain items are discounted during certain months.

For example, you'll find that July is a good time to stock up on school supplies.

Here are the best months to buy, according to Bach:
