Phoenix, AZ -- (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired infielder Tony Abreu from the Los Angeles Dodgers, finalizing an August 31 trade for pitcher Jon Garland, the club announced on Friday. The 24-year-old played eight games for the Dodgers in 2009, hitting .250 (2- for-8) with one run batted in. He appeared in 77 games between Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A Chattanooga and finished with a .312 average with 11 homers and 53 RBI. "Tony is a switch hitter with the ability to play many infield positions and can swing the bat," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said. "He certainly will be involved in the competition for second base and add depth and flexibility to our roster." Over 65 major league contests, all with the Dodgers, Abreu has posted a .270 average to go along with two home runs and 18 RBI. To get Abreu on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Bobby Korecky for assignment.
