Reyes Hopes To Get Off Schneid Against Astros

(Sports Network) - Southpaw Jo-Jo Reyes tries again to snap a month-long skid tonight, when the Atlanta Braves host the Houston Astros in the middle test of a three-game series at Turner Field.

Reyes, a second-round draft pick in 2003, was 2-1 after a 5-2 defeat of the Oakland Athletics on May 18. He's won just once since, however, while taking five losses and a pair of no-decisions in eight starts.

He pitched well enough to win in his last outing on June 29, giving up six hits and a run in seven innings of a 1-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. In three starts since his last victory, in fact, he's given up just 17 hits and six earned runs in 16 1/3 innings.

Reyes is 1-0 in two career starts against the Astros with a 5.59 earned run average in 9 2/3 innings.

For Houston, 30-year-old Chris Sampson makes a return to the starting rotation.

The former eighth-round draft pick (1999) began the season in the rotation and made 10 starts, going 3-3 with a 6.04 ERA before heading to the bullpen in late May.

As a reliever, he gave up just four earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over 13 appearances overall, and has allowed just one run in seven outings since June 11.

Sampson has faced Atlanta three times in his career, including two starts, and is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in nine innings, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs.

On Friday, Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer to lead Atlanta past Houston, 6-2.

Chipper Jones and Brian McCann each had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Braves, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Tim Hudson (9-6) allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings, fanning six and walking three to record his second win in three starts.

Lance Berkman knocked in a run for the Astros, who lost for the fourth straight time.

Starter Brian Moehler (4-4) took the loss for Houston, charged with six hits and five runs with one strikeout and three walks in six innings.

This is the first series of the season between these teams.
