Phillies To Conclude Low-Scoring Series With Nationals

(Sports Network) - Despite scoring just one run in their current set with the Washington Nationals, the Philadelphia Phillies go for a series victory over their NL East rival in tonight's finale of a three-game series at Nationals Park.

The Phillies dropped the opener of this set, 4-0, on Monday before winning a 1-0 pitcher's duel on Tuesday. Philadelphia has lost three of five versus the Nationals this year, and has managed just 14 runs against them while allowing 24.

That is largely due to Philadelphia's inability to hit with runners in scoring position. The Phils are hitting .251 in those situations this year and were 0- for-16 with runners in scoring position during this series before Greg Dobbs' pinch-hit single to center in the ninth inning plated Pedro Feliz for the one- run victory.

Cole Hamels received no run support for the second time this season against the Nationals. He lost a 1-0 decision in the second game of the year but threw blanks on Tuesday, striking out 11 with two walks and four hits allowed in seven innings. The gem came on the heels of his first career shutout against Atlanta and stretched Hamels' scoreless innings streak to 19 1/3.

Tom Gordon (4-2) registered the victory and Brad Lidge recorded his 11th save, stopping the Phillies' three-game skid.

Jason Bergmann was equally as good as Hamels, surrendering five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over seven frames.

Nats shortstop Cristian Guzman has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games after recording a pair of hits on Tuesday. He is batting .362 (25-for-69) in that span.

Guzman is batting .290 (9-for-31) with four doubles, one homer and three RBI off of tonight's starter for the Phillies, Jamie Moyer.

Moyer is 3-3 with a 4.89 earned run average this season and picked up a win his last time out, defeating Toronto on Friday behind 6 2/3 innings of three- run, seven-hit ball. The left-hander also struck out a season-high tying five while walking just a pair.

Moyer faced Washington on April 3 and earned a no-decision in Philadelphia's eventual 8-7 win. The 45-year-old gave up six runs, but just three were earned as the Phils committed a costly error during a five-run first frame for the Nationals. The Nats' final run of the game off Moyer also came on an error in the fourth inning.

In his career, Moyer is 6-4 with a 3.16 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) against the Nationals.

With Washington skipping over Shawn Hill so he can rest an ailing elbow, Matt Chico returns to the rotation tonight. Chicago lost five straight starts from April 5-26 and got a no-decision on May 3 before being demoted to the bullpen. He had a 6.87 ERA as a starter, but in 6 1/3 innings of relief work, the left- hander has given up just a run on six hits.

Chico started against the Phillies on March 31 and got a no-decision after giving up three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings of his team's 11-6 win. He gave up two hits and a home run to Chase Utley while also allowing Pat Burrell to drove home a run.

In three career starts versus Philadelphia, Chico is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA.

Utley, though, is just five for his last 23 (.217) with no homers and one RBI. Burrell, meanwhile, is 3-for-23 (.130) over his last seven games with one homer and one RBI.
