Giant Eagle Cuts Prices; Which Store Offers Best Deal?

Produce, Meat Now Cost Less, Company Says

POSTED: 5:31 pm EDT September 28, 2009

If Pittsburgh is on the verge of a grocery store price war, Giant Eagle fired the first shot this week by saying it cut prices of produce and meat.

Even before that news, Giant Eagle pharmacies were offering some antibiotics for free.

WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Marcie Cipriani visited three stores -- Giant Eagle, Shop 'N Save and Kuhn's Market -- to find out where shoppers can get a more cost-effective choice.

The items that Giant Eagle has discounted are apples, tomatoes, lettuce and Valencia oranges.

At Shop 'n Save, the same items cost a bit more overall. (Channel 4 Action News chose to compare red delicious apples, because they're fairly common and Shop 'n Save's apples vary in price.)

At Kuhn's, the prices are either less expensive or the same as Giant Eagle's advertised discount prices.

When you add up Giant Eagle's new prices on these items, you will pay $5.25.

Shop 'n Save will charge $6.94 -- or $1.69 more than Giant Eagle -- for the produce.

Kuhn's tallies up at $5.01 -- 24 cents cheaper than Giant Eagle.

With all the advertised discounts and deals, Cipriani found that in the end, what you see on the outside may need a closer look inside.

Cipriani also spoke with owners and managers of some other local chain grocery stores, but none wanted to talk about any discount programs they were planning.
