Friday morning, some local areas were less than 5 degrees above the record low. No doubt, residents were glancing at the thermostat.

And there are plenty of colder days to come.
So, how much is it going to cost to heat homes this winter?Roughly 924,000 customers heat their homes with natural gas from either Columbia Gas, Equitable Gas, or Dominion Peoples.All three companies are now revealing the size of their rate increases for the coming winter.Equitable Gas is raising rates by 24 percent -- that translates to $27 a month.Dominion Peoples is raising rates by 22 percent -- or $26 a month.And Columbia Gas is looking at a 46 percent increase -- or an average of $47 a month.
